Muir's Tours - Volunteer Scheme

We need enquiries from volunteers (not necessarily experts and specialists) who can help short or long term. We need "enthusiastic" people who are articulate, organised and flexible enough to deliver our volunteer programmes.

Who are we ? The Nepal Kingdom Foundation has a number of projects in Nepal and through Muir's Tours support is provided in a variety of ways to projects and local communities in many countries around the world.

Tibetan Traders is our associate operation, which is helping Tibetan refugees help themselves.

Volunteer Posts

There are a number of options - We need you if you can...

1. Teach English and possibly other subjects in various countries. We can help you arrange a TEFL course if you are not qualified or lack the skills needed.

If you are also able to help Tibetan refugees improve the arts and crafts (jewellery & carpet mostly), we have places near Pokhara, Nepal.

If you have a working knowledge of Spanish we have TEFL posts in poor schools in rural Peru.

2. Educate, feed, provide medical support and generally care for street children in Kolkata (Calcutta) India.

3. Research (on site training), observe and record the behaviour of wild horses in Mongolia.

4. Help teach environmental practices and project supervision.

5. Provide technical expertise - Hydro-electrification for alternative energy*.

6. Help train local people in electrical equipment safety - Basic level upwards.

7. Provide health awareness training for local people - Basic level upwards.

8. Provide technical expertise - e.g. Water supply systems & pipelines, Building technical services or skilled labour.

9. Manage permaculture and forestry projects.

10. Impart some of the skills needed for setting up projects, such as handicraft workshops for Tibetan refugees.

Training: If for example you are doing field research for us we will provide the necessary background information and teach you about the techniques to be employed. If however, you want a particular post, such as teaching English as a second language, we would give priority to those who had completed a suitable course, the basic being TEFL or have gained relevant experience.

Travel Arrangements: You have to pay for your travel to the placement location and transit accommodation costs. The likely cost is between GBP500 - GBP700.

Accommodation and Food: The cost is minimal as the accommodation is basic and usually involves living with the local people or in tents. The food is prepared on a communal basis and is based on local produce. Typically the daily cost for food and accommodation is about GBP5 / USD8, there are alternatives in some locations and although the cost varies, it is not normally more than GBP14 / USD20 per day. Samoa is the exception with a daily cost of GBP25 / USD44.

Registration Fee:  There is a standard fee of GBP200 / USD400 per person to cover our administration costs on most projects, some projects have higher fees.

Involvement: Commit to staying on the project for a minimum of one month, or lesser period as required by us. There is ample free time for leisure, but usually we need to know the numbers available for work in order to plan, so you must be part of the team.

Requirements: The requirements vary from project to project in respect of professional and skilled volunteers, but in general volunteers need to be:-
a) in good health and
b) at least 18 years of age and
c) fluent in English and have a working knowledge of a local language (i.e. Spanish for Latin America).
