Muir's Tours - Dog Sledding

Norway / Lapland
Introduction to Dog Sledding - SM
0

If you think Dog sledding is just a pipe dream, think again.  Just about everyone of the novices who has joined us on this, did so with at least some trepidation but went home full of exhilaration and many have gone on to repeat the experience.  Some guests say it is the dogs - they are very appealing, others say it is the excitement of the ride, which is sky high. And some say it is the cosy romantic cabins.

Mushing in the far north of Norway on the Finnmark plateau for those with little or no experience, just an adventurous spirit and a reasonable sense of balance, plus average fitness. After a few hours you will be mushing your own dog sled in northern Lapland.

The tour starts from the comfort of our cabins, in the heart of the Sámi homeland and heads north to the hills, where we traverse the plateau. Please note that some cabins do not have ensuite toilet facilities, so a short walk to the main lodge may be needed in the middle of the night. Book early and request a cabin with ensuite toilet if you do not like the idea of a stroll in the night.

On this husky safari we may meet some of the Sami people and learn something about their life. Near the Hotel Rica in Karasjok is a cultural centre where a vast amount of information about the Sami is available, including a free film presentation.

This is a very popular husky safari in the beauty of northern Lapland. We have set dates, but will run the trip anytime for 4 people or more, subject to dogs and sleds being available.

Outline itinerary - Ref: SM0

Day 1  Fly in to Lakselv and take a local for a one hour drive to Hotel Rica in Karasjok. Free transfer to our lodge.  During the evening meal our guide will brief you about the next few days. Overnight in one of our cabins. D.

Day 2  After breakfast we get you into your snowsuit, boots etc. We then organise the teams of huskies and teach you the basics of caring for your team and driving the sleds. After this introduction you will be given your "own" team of 4-6 dogs. The long sled-tour starts directly from the lodge. After a steep climb up to the mountain plateau we are mushing over a hilly stretch, crossing lakes, marshes and a stretch of barren land to Gardin Lodge.   B, L, D.

Day 3  We spend two nights at the wilderness cabin, which enables us to travel light when we explorer the area. We stop for a lunch break around an open fire. The area is an important winter pasture for reindeers. B, L, D.

Day 4 We have a long stretch through a variety of beautiful landscape back to our cabins.  A warm sauna and a hot tub are waiting for us, and a farewell dinner gathered in the warm atmosphere.  B, L, D.

Day 5  Continue with your next Muir's Tour or return to the airport.  Transfer to Karasjok. B.
