If this was a perfect world, everyone working in tourism or living in a touristic area would be benefiting from tourism. Unfortunately the world is far from perfect, and many people, particularly in poor countries who are involved in tourism are abused by employers and in some cases by tourists.  We cannot claim 100% perfection on all of our tours, but with your help we will improve and maybe other western tour operators and local employers will take notice and become more responsible.  To be sustainable tourism must benefit all who are involved or affected and respect natures order.

"By choosing a Muir's Tours experience you will be bringing benefit to the places and people you meet. In addition all profits will be divided between worthy causes in the countries you visit and our core charities. The result being that everyone benefits. All profits, means 100%. Not a small percentage as part of a marketing gimmick. In addition we ensure that our administration costs are low. This is possible as we have a small army of volunteers who help our staff. Our premises are rent free thanks to our generous landlords."

Muir's Tours is a non profit organisation sharing the benefits from your travel with many communities and charities such as The John Muir Trust, The Tibetan Government in exile, American Indian Heritage Association, Survival International, Tourism Concern, WWF and our owners, the UK based charity The Nepal Kingdom Foundation

Specialising in small group travel, we offer wildlife safaris, activities such as trekking / hiking, white water rafting, horse riding, kayaking and biking. Plus immersion into certain cultures by staying with indigenous people in a variety of remote places.

If you think it is all too late, that places like Bali have become the Costa Brava of the east. Or that Singapore has more in common with Dallas, and Kuala Lumpur is pretty much like New York in high summer, then think again. We know there are many places that are not wanting to become a tourist hot spot, the local people know better, they want to retain their lifestyle, but benefit from a limited amount of tourism. We can take a limited number of you to special places where you can experience life in the slow lane - as it has been lived for thousands of years in some cases.  Ask about our Community Homestay options.

Our active adventures are set in remote areas, usually mountainous locations with hiking, biking, horse-riding and kayaking being the most popular activities. Popular locations are Chile (Torres del Paine), Argentina (Fitzroy - Los Glaciares NP), Tibet, Tanzania, Peru, Nepal and India, but we also go to such places as Siberia and Lapland (summer and winter). The dry hot summers of Mongolia or southern Siberia are great for experiencing unusual cultures as well as action adventures.

For our culture experiences we prefer to live with the local people for a few nights, not just gorp at them for a few hours. For example, in addition to a wildlife safari we provide you with real exposure to Maasai culture in Tanzania and in South Dakota the Lakota people welcome you and teach you the "old ways". In places such as Thailand and Mongolia we live with the local people in a village that is way off the beaten track, where very few travellers ever venture.

Some SERIOUS stuff and some not so serious stuff - Just how life should be

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

"We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost's familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster.

The other fork of the road - the one "less traveled by"- offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures
the preservation of the Earth." - Rachel Carson

Wonderful News - December 2006
The bushmen of the Kalahari desert are the winners in a court case that was to have expelled them from their ancient homeland.  WOW what a result. Well done all of the team at Survival and the Survival supporters.
